3....The Law

I know, I know, bring on the lawyer jokes. As much as we like to sometimes dismiss lawyers as money sucking leeches, the truth is you are going to need one and here's why.

legal advice for starting your business

How many lawyers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

As many as you can afford.

Not funny, I hear you say. Wasn't meant to be, is my reply.

A lawyer will help you with the following.

1. What legal form your business should take.

2. Advice on personal gaurantees.

3. Interpreting the various employment laws.

4. Contracts that you are about to enter into blindly, such as leases or supplier contracts.

5. Patents and trade marks.

Some lawyers are better than others, and generally the better they are the more they charge. Get a price up front, a good lawyer will be up front with you about the outlay. Make sure any lawyer you settle on has experience in your particular industry.

If they operate their office from their car, keep looking.
